Is Quantum Fiber Any Good?

I'm a Quantum Fiber technician based in Colorado, with around a year of experience installing this equipment. Allow me to share my honest perspective on Quantum Fiber. We use Smart NID (ONT) and WiFi 6 pods (Routers) for our installations. If you order the pods along with your service, you'll receive two from the technician, and you can easily order more through the 360 WiFi app. These pods create a built-in WiFi mesh network that blankets your entire home with high-speed internet.

One crucial factor I've noticed is pod placement. During setup in the 360 WiFi app, it's essential to follow the guidance on optimal pod placement for the best connectivity and signal strength. When the pods maintain a strong connection with each other, the network performs exceptionally well. However, if they have weak connections, it can lead to speed issues.

I genuinely endorse these products and believe they offer great value for the price. As of today (3/20/24) in Colorado for residential homes and businesses, our pricing plans are price for life at $50/month for 500 Mbps upload and download and $75/month for 940 Mbps upload and download (It may vary depending on where you live). Additionally, we currently have a referral program. By using the link attached to this post or REFERRAL CODE AD31045 while signing up, new customers can receive up to a $100 prepaid Visa gift card in the mail shortly after the installation is complete. So, if you're interested in giving it a try, your first month is on us.

I have faith in this product and look forward to its future. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out via PM or by commenting on this post.

Is there any updates on IPv6 support, whether it's at the barest minimum enabling 6rd properly on the SmartNIDs, or preferably actual dual stack? It's bonkers that the whole rest of Lumen's networks support dual stack natively, but it's 6rd or nothing on the end user side, and even that doesn't work properly on anything newer than the C3000 series, as far as Quantum's CPE goes.

asuengineer051 points • 2024-03-28

I’m wondering the same thing. Are they waiting to switch all cl fiber over to quantum first? 6rd speeds dropped when enabled I had cl fiber.

I recently got quantum fiber installed 2 days ago. I had Xfinity internet before then and was getting about 1.2 GB down and about 30 megabits per second up. I was skeptical about quantum fiber because I heard so many bad reviews online and people having a bad experience. But I wanted to take the plunge because I really needed fiber with my needs at home with my family all working or going to school from home.

I'm also in IT networking as a profession. I got to say in my 30-year career in IT, quantum fiber was the absolute best in installation quality, customer service both in person and on the customer service phone number they give you. Stellar customer service, stellar installation, and after the modem was installed I was getting about 9.8 up and down. I only paid for 3GIG up and down and I'm averaging about 2GIG/UP/DOWN. We had a bit of a snafu with some of the noise on the fiber, the tech came back out the next day and corrected it. The house I lived at never had fiber in it before so this is an absolutely new installation.

The only issue I had is with my Asus ET12s It was initially getting 400 MB down. After he came out and fix the line it was golden. The only thing I would say is try to use your own router and node. I have my router connected to my modem on cat8 because I have an older house and need more insulation on the line. I have a ethernet backhaul that goes downstairs as well and it's running absolutely crisp.

I can't say enough good things about the whole experience. I'm super excited to be away from Xfinity once and for all.

I wonder if theres issues with my line from the PFP to MST.

My upload speed is very erratic.. especially when it passes through any router I own (including the QF pod). Drops into 200-300mbps range. Wired + Wireless... Wired less.. but still happens.

Triggering a "remote" speed test through app (shows 990+ throughput; pre copper) seems to "fix" throughput all around, but only last a few minutes.

Reseating GPON cable also fixes throughput, but same issue as the speed test.

Its like the signal gets "boosted" in the ONT internally if that makes sense.. Also indirectly boosts WI-FI throughput, which shouldn't really make a difference, but it does.

Otherwise it seems like I have "interference" on the entire 5-7ghz wireless spectrum... every single channel..

The kicker is that it only happens on Upload. Download has no issues..

I already swapped my ONT and I'm on a more basic GPON service, but it was driving me insane since it's more or less intermittent... QF support can only check light levels apparently.

Maybe I should try a CAT8?.. Doubt it will fix my problem, but maybe theres some underlying EMI with ONT.

Using 26AWG STP CAT6 currently.

cat8 because I have an older house and need more insulation on the line.

Can you clarify this? I have a century home and I've never heard anyone suggest it needs beefier ethernet.

renegadellf6 points • 2024-03-21

I was one of the pilot deployments in AZ and rode through many of the initial kinks in rolling out the new infrastructure. Chat support was abysmal but the customer care tech support people are some of the best I've encounted in decades of internet service across multiple companies.

if I may impart what I've learned:

Don't use the super pods, they are trash and will fail; I went through three deployments of fresh super pods before quantum finally set us up with 9500 smart nids; since then the performance has been top tier. price point is perfect, and in my area is a massive breath of fresh air for anyone still suffering from cox

your mileage may vary

thanks for the info and heads up... can you detail the equipment you had a good experience with pls? I want to be sure.. and I'm not sure what the 9500 is. Thanks in advance

Pity I was just installed yesterday in western WA...

So far, it kicks ass. You documentation on your web page for how to configure my personal router properly leaves a lot to be desired. Thank God(s) for the fine folk who have supported each other in the past on this sub; I was able to more or less plug and play into my c5500xk letting it handle the DCHP and the VLAN tagging.

Also, your website is hot garbage, I log in, navigate around, all of a sudden I am logged back out. I thought Charter had a low-rent vibe... then I navigated yours.

Thizzedoutcyclist1 points • 2024-03-21

Can you link to a good guide on this?

rchiwawa1 points • 2024-03-22

I van walk you through it in a bit.  I just saw your ask and can type it out later.  Some important things to sort out on your end in the mean time.

Does your third party router allow you to configure the VLAN tag?

What model ONT do you have? (E.g. c5500xk,c6500xk, etc)

Are you on Century link or Quantum Fiber.  From what I understand this is important for simplifying the process

Thizzedoutcyclist1 points • 2024-03-22

Thanks, I don’t see a Vlan tag on my router settings. It’s an ASUS GT6 ROG. I’m getting Quantum Fiber and they are said to use the C55 or 65. Install is in a week so I’m just getting ready to set this up.

rchiwawa1 points • 2024-03-22

On page 58 of the manual for your router is instruction for setting up IPTV which is how Asus refers to the configuration for the VLAN set up.  Yours has an option for selecting an ISP profile and in that you'd select Century Link or Quantum Fiber.  If neither are there and since I am not personally familiar with setting it up this way I'd say make a post thread asking about how to set up your particular router.  Someone way more knowledgeable will likely come in with the answers you seek and actually be able to field questions I can't.

In the mean time I will link you w/ what helped me out

Thizzedoutcyclist1 points • 2024-03-22

Gotcha I definitely see a drop down for Century Link on IPTV. I didn’t realize that was the setting for vlan. Thank you for explaining that.

BobChica1 points • 2024-03-25

It is a legacy from the multi-tier Video/Voice/Data offerings from the early days of fiber, to position it head to head against the cable operators. Streaming and the decline in wired phone demand left data as the only viable service but the design of the network requires VLAN support.

CSPG3054 points • 2024-03-21

Been using it for over 2 yrs now.

my only complaints

1: sometimes my lan connection drops to only 100mbps up/down , while my WiFi still gets 500mbps-1g.

When this happens I restart the modem and then my lan is faster than my WiFi.

2: restarting the Modena via the quantum apps sucks half the time the app says it can’t find the modem. While WiFi 360 works flawlessly but doesn’t have the reboot feature.

I would highly recommend this server , I’ve had Verizon fios, spectrum, Comcast (Xfinity) etc quantum has been my fav for speeds/quality/ and pricing

bastion_xx3 points • 2024-03-21

Used it for 5 years in Colorado before moving and overall the 1G (940/940) service was consistent, performant, and only a couple outages during that time. All for $65/mo.

But it's the $65/mo that makes me critical of CTL. Price for life was provided (if fact I got it down to $55/mo on a repricing deal), but then they restructured under the Quantum Fiber moniker and they were able to jack the price up to $75/mo.

So, if you get Quantum Fiber, save every and all contracts, service orders, and anything else that states price for life. And if said documents don't state that, call and ask to get that in writing.

Other than them reneging on the agreed upon pricing, it's a well designed infrastructure and served me well. Now living in rural areas, I only have StarLink as an option. Miss my upload speeds!

Electronic_Visit69532 points • 2024-03-20

I would like to give Quantum another try but the service was very unreliable and sadly the customer service was the absolute worst.

HauntingProblem55514 points • 2024-03-21

Yea I must say, from when QF first got launched in the Denver market around a year ago, there was a lot of kinks in the system to figure out. But I will say it has progressed immensely over just a year. So it may be worth another shot, if I was you I would be optimistic to give it another try, if not now maybe down the road!

Does quantum allow use of homeowners own networking gear, like bridge mode or direct connection to the NID?

BobChica3 points • 2024-03-25

On CenturyLink, my router is connected directly to the dumb ONT. On Quantum, the smartNID has to be placed in transparent bridge mode to deactivate its built-in NAT routing feature. Your network hardware needs to provide 802.1Q VLAN tagging on port 201, either via your router or a managed switch between the ONT and the router.

Had 4 cancellations, losing $250 in credits each time, simply because I want the fibre in a conduit and not just laying on the grass I’ll soon be mowing again for weeks or months. Decided to install the 45’ conduit run privately if I ever switch from CL just bc of that. If they can’t even get step #1 right…

patriotraitor2 points • 2024-03-21

I'm an existing customer in South Dakota who's had CenturyLink fiber since 2022 and it was pretty good at the time, but over the last year or so I've noticed a real downgrade in consistency with service -- random moments where my wifi will drop to 50mbs or so, but then a few days later is 450 down.

My ping has changed from 3ms to about 16ms because there's no local CenturyLink server here anymore which baffles me, because they were a pretty huge company.

I decided to make the manual switch to Quantum Fiber, and I keep reading that it's really just the same service, just rebranded -- but also I've read conflicting things that it's a new system, or upgraded -- that there are smaller changes to the service.

So long story short, am I going to notice any better QOL differences between two services? Also, the C4000XG is pure trash... please tell me they at least swap you for something new? I downgraded to a 500mbps plan because 940/940 was really just overkill for me and I'm okay with spending $20 less for it.

These are the facts:
Internet went out Wednesday night.
Thursday morning I called to speak with tech support. After a 45 minute hold I spoke with a technician. After working with them unplugging everything plugging everything back in and waiting for 30 minutes he determined our box was bad. At that time we schedule a technician to come to the house between 8 and 10:30 in the morning. at 10 o’clock I was notified the technician was running late. at noon I called back, and after another 35 minute hold I spoke with an agent who was very unhelpful. At 3 o’clock I called tech-support again and after a 45 minute hold I went through the exact same process. I went through on Wednesday night.. I asked when the tech was arriving and nobody had an answer. Could not find my information in the system, so they reschedule a tech to come out on Saturday. Although everybody on the phone was very friendly, no one was able to help or do anything everyone kept assuring me that a technician was coming to the house today, but it is now 4:35 PM and nobody has shown up. I have completely lost faith that anyone will show up on Saturday. They do not have an option to deliver a hotspot for temporary service. We were very happy with the service when it was working. Unfortunately we’ve only had it for two weeks. If this continues, we will find another service. I have lost $400 for not working today but they did offer a $5 dollar rebate. lol

Update:
My appointment was for 1:00, it is now 1:30 with no call and no technician. Although I was assured by two texts that the technician would arrive today.

I have been on hold for 25 minutes now. I am now changing my review to 1 star. Sorry Quantum Fiber you have lied and failed again.

MikeyRedFL2 points • 2024-10-12

I got in about a month ago on the 1GB free equipment and installation plan for $35/mo (including taxes) for life deal. I had Xfinity 1GB and with my own eq it was up $115/Mo and it was going down every time it rained and they couldn't fix it. Got fiber modem and WIFI7 router and it is the best I have ever experienced so far. I did not lose service during Milton (a TS here) but my Xfinity neighbors were down for 1 day. getting 975 ish up and down.

Plus their customer service is attentive . My experiences with Xfinity made me lose it a few times on the CS folks who were clueless.

Darklumiere1 points • 2024-03-20

Can I ask if you know when purchasing a static ip block will be possible for home users? I've been told different things by different customer service reps from not knowing what a static ip is, to saying it's impossible to deploy because Quantum Fiber is prepaid(???). My IP seems to renew every time the ONT loses power for more than a few seconds, which is rare now that I got it on a UPS, but not uncommon with updates and occasional needed reboots.

imtalkintou6 points • 2024-03-20

It's coming, is about all we ever hear.

keithkman0 points • 2024-03-21

Why would you need a static public facing ip for home use?

onefst250r1 points • 2024-11-14

Running applications/servers/websites at home.

keithkman1 points • 2024-11-14

Just run them off Tailscale or similar. Dedicated ip. That’s what I do for my home server.

onefst250r0 points • 2024-11-14

Or get a static IP? Then they dont have to use third party apps/infra in their stack.

keithkman1 points • 2024-11-14

Get a static IP how? Astatic ip isn’t available with Quantum.

onefst250r1 points • 2024-11-14

Quantum has documentation on how to configure it.

https://www.quantumfiber.com/support/equipment/static-ip-setup/smartnid.html

So its very likely possible, just a matter of finding the correct people/team within their organization that can provide/sell it.

Thizzedoutcyclist1 points • 2024-03-21

How nice does quantum play with Moca adapters? I am planning to leave Xfinity and go to Quantum but I want to use my existing mesh router system. I would need to rely on a Moca adapter to leverage a coax run to get the ONT Ethernet across the house to my first router. Testing this now with surfboard modem and I am experiencing vpn disconnects for work so stability is a must.

HauntingProblem55513 points • 2024-03-21

If you have Cat 5/6 (Ethernet) wiring going across your house as well as the coax you wouldn't need to use the Moca adapter. We have equipment that we can use to have our go over Ethernet. But theoretically it should work just fine, I can't confirm tho.

Thizzedoutcyclist1 points • 2024-03-21

I don’t have cat 5 or 6 to the location just coax. Is the ONT considered a router? I saw it referred to that in the material for setup. Also, is it difficult to set it to a bridge mode to use one’s own router? Can you just run Ethernet off it to your own router?

HauntingProblem55512 points • 2024-03-21

The ONT doesn't emit a WiFi signal so I would more so consider it a "modem". But in terms of hooking it up to your own router, it is somewhat simple to put it in bridge mode if you're experienced with accessing the GUI. It does require that you hard wire a device to it to access the GUI though since it doesn't have a WiFi signal to connect to. And yeah from there Ethernet over to your router will work after that.

Thizzedoutcyclist1 points • 2024-03-21

I appreciate your help. It’s hard to get these questions answered. My big issue is placement but I have my appointment set for next week Thursday.

My intent is to use one of these to convert Ethernet out of the ONT and carry it over coax to my router. I could also use this to connect it to my Mac and access the admin settings to flip to bridge mode if needed.

HauntingProblem55511 points • 2024-03-21

I'm not seeing the guide pop up, but this sub Reddit has a lot of comments around bridge mode. It should be in the Advanced settings, then WAN setting, and should be a transparent tab that you can switch to bridge mode. And if you would ever like to take it out of bridge mode, it's as simple as holding the factory reset button until it fully resets.

Vaughn10001 points • 2024-05-13

WARNING WARNING...incompatible with LG TVs..I did not find this out until installation. Not the technician, salesperson, customer service..no one warned me of this outstanding issue. This was only discovered after intense Google and Reddit searches and at least 20 service calls to Quatum. Needless to say I cancelled. Also the PODS are very sketchy on transmission and connectivity, with problems in either too little or too many PODS active. Avoid the severe frustration is maybe saving a few bucks instead get reliable clear channel service. We went back to Xfinity and worked instantly no dropped connections, works perfectly out of the box.

Secondly 3 days ago I was sent a letter from Quatum charging me $654 for unreturned pods which I had on March 25th, today is May 13th. Tells you something about their quality of customer service. I had to get on the phone spell out the UPS tracking number.

VegasInternetGuy2 points • 2024-06-21

This is outdated information as this was a problem but it has been resolved. If anyone has this issue it's due to the compatibility issue inside select LG TVs. There are advanced security features that block the use of apps in select LG TVs with a select network adaptor. The Quantum Fiber success team should be able to remove these advanced security features to allow LG TVs to work on the network.

I just switched from centurylink to quantum and the tech ran a ethernet cable from the old calix to the new ont 5500xk. Does this sound right? I thought they would run the fiber optic to the new ont

RobertPPAP1 points • 2024-08-12

Its rare but possible, It might be that the C5500XK was not able to be used directly with the exact type of CALIX OLT in your central office or in a box on the street . Or the tech was lazy

Quiet-Sky69901 points • 2024-08-12

Yeah, I think he was lazy. I ended up getting it to work with the original ONT and I disconnected the c5500.

RobertPPAP1 points • 2024-08-12

you would want to keep the C5500XK where it was just not plugged in so if they want it back/ replace it (remove your ONT from the loop) they won't think you sold it on ebay

Sigma_Ultimate1 points • 2024-09-11

Um, Quantum is Centurylink.

Quiet-Sky69901 points • 2024-09-12

That wasn't the point at all did it go over your head? Also the one comment you made is entirely wrong as well. Quantum fiber and Centurylink are 2 different internet brands. Which are both under Lumen Technologies.

Sigma_Ultimate1 points • 2024-09-12

2020 name change to Lumen

On September 14, 2020, CenturyLink, Inc announced that it had changed its name to Lumen Technologies, Inc.[49] Effective with the opening of the trading day on Sept. 18, 2020, the company stock ticker changed from CTL to LUMN. The CenturyLink brand will continue to be the customer-facing brand for traditional copper-based services. Fiber-based products and services use the brand Quantum Fiber.[50]

I’m with Quantum right now and let me share my experience, the internet and speeds are great, billing is great it’s cheap for good speeds. The horror comes with their customer service, the customer service is literally so god awful I have no clue how the business is still standing and how it’s even acceptable to them. I haven’t had internet for a week and a half, my pods just decided to disconnect from the modem not sending a wireless signal. I tried for two days before finally getting a person on the phone with support, he spent an hour with me and threw in the towel and scheduled a service appointment, this appointment was supposed to happen anywhere from 8:00 AM-10:30 AM, I got an email at 11:00 Am saying they were “running a little late” it is now 2:30 PM and not a single sign or update on this appointment. And I tried to call customer service but I’m sure you can guess how far that got me. Terrible terrible, the customer service alone is enough to make me go back to Xfinity and pay the $65 more a month for the same speeds

I recently had Quantum Fiber come out and install last week. I just canceled my service after only one week.

I did not know they needed to literally drill into the house to set up, but how could I say no? Tech did not caulk the entry point. Then the tech set up 1 extra pod, ignoring the downstairs, called it good, and left. That pod only got 30mbps download and was supposed to also support the floor below.

The actual reason I canceled is that I wanted to get more pods, but their support is ATROCIOUS. I could not contact them in any convenient way. In the app, chat doesn't work at all. On mobile, good luck finding the page that gets the chat window to show up. I eventually called and got a callback two hours later, while waiting in the 99+ person desktop chat queue for good measure. The support person was obviously from a busy sounding call center in India.

At this rate I decided it's not worth the future hassle. You also cannot cancel without calling, the button will only direct you to call them. Experience was 2/10, would not ever touch anything CenturyLink ever again. Comcast at least has good support and physical stores you can get to.

Positive-Emu-34811 points • 2024-08-31

Several hrs phone wait, no one responded, tried online tech assistance at over 2 hrs finally got to correspond with a tech, replaced pod, no luck, tried all the resets, no luck, 2 more hrs. waiting for tech assist, only to be cut off when I was 2nd in line, call sales, they answer the phone after 1 ring. Seems what your selling is high tech, customer support is No tech. I'm going back to cable!

Sigma_Ultimate1 points • 2024-09-11

They simply suck ass!!! The website said my area has fiber. That was a lie. They allowed me to make an installation appointment, pay the first month, had the tech come out, then sent me emails n texts stating an escalation ticket was placed indefinitely, and they'll contact me when they're ready to complete the installation.

If I would have known Centurylink was just rebranded...oh hell no I wouldn't have signed up.

What a joke!!

This is the theory: once they're ready to lay fiber in the area, they don't use their own money, they lie to you that the fiber is available, take everyone's money, then use that money to pay the fiber the claimed was already laid.

Mark my words Centurylink, you suck, you've always sucked, and no one sees you doing anything other but sucking. Never ever will I be anywhere close to procuring anything or any service from you.

Goodbye forever!

Due_Glove17961 points • 2024-09-15

ur experience in Shoreline, Washington, has been a nightmare. I wish you luck reaching customer support. Not until I asked for a cancellation mailing label for the equipment did I get a promise to send a tech to fix their glitchy equipment. Incredibly disappointing are the Wi-Fi extenders, which look great but serve no purpose other than as a doorstop. The Quantum Fiber app is awful as well. One rep of the many I spoke to admitted problems with it. A tech is scheduled to come on Monday. If they arrive, I will be shocked.

Don’t fall for the trap, this is the worst internet service since dial-up. I’m a senior software engineer and from product to customer service they are a festering mess. The app will tell you you’re getting 960+ but you never will and they will tell you “speed is not guaranteed” even when you’re actual WiFi speed drops to 20mpbs. I had 4 technicians come to our house all said everything was fine while I showed them our devices were getting less than 95% of the speed we pay for. They began gaslighting me into thinking this was expected behavior. I wrote some code on a Raspberry Pi to monitor the speed throughout the day and found that over 10 times a day, over 6 hours of a given day on average, our actual WiFi speed was 20mpbs or below. They took no responsibility, and never even acknowledged the failing quality of service. When the WiFi actually worked it was great speed but unless you want to take a gamble on the actual fiber being stable and use a 3rd party router quantum/century link is a scam and will devour your time and self worth for substance like the gluttonous festering ghoul they are. I shall resume this conversation in therapy, thank you.

No. Quantum Fiber is terrible.

I'm super excited to finally be able to get rid of COX cable once and for all!!  We've had to use cable ever since it was available for our television, where we lived an antenna was required for reception on it.  I don't recall when Cox cable came into the picture but I do remember that their customer service has never been anything close to satisfactory.  I was highly trained and worked as a customer service specialist for a major corporation in the Los Angeles area (I was responsible for all Fax machines in five counties; the gentlemen who I supervised in my work group and I won many awards for providing excellent customer satisfaction, just to give you some of my background).  Cox cable has heard from me more than a dozen times regarding the issues we were having with their customer support, their equipment, as well as their connectivity and reliability issues yet the only result we saw was our bill increasing almost annually.   I have high hopes for CenturyLink now not just because their customer service has already proven to be far better than Cox, but to try the new Quantum Fiber network, plus knowing the price we pay now is guaranteed for a lifetime.   Living in Las Vegas, it'll be interesting to see how the weather extremes affect the quantum fiber network.   Just a quick note for those who live in rural areas, please realize that it's most likely your location that is causing technical issues you might be having, to give your provider a chance to rectify any problems arising where you live.  I know it could sound hoiky-doiky but I'm serious.  When we used to depend on telephone lines for fax transmitions,  it was a true thing when I had to explain to a customer that sharks will attack the phone lines that run along the ocean floor, and that's why their fax weren't going through as expected.  Lol true fact.  Talk about sounding hoiky-doiky!

Is quantum fiber going to be available in New River? I live in the boonies, and we dream of fiber internet, so I was cautiously optimistic when I saw a Quantum Fiber truck at the local CenturyLink station.

Have you heard about the new boxes being fire hazards potentially

They will bait and switch you for the wifi mesh pods based on wifi6 performance surveys from some random phone from the tech who shows up to do the install, despite what you may be told.

Despite their attempt to distance themselves from the lumen brand... it's still the same disappointing company..

Worst company I’ve ever worked with. Period.

I've been a customer of Quantum Fiber for about a week now (12/4/24 today). So far they have shut off my internet service without notice, installed a wireless router that doesn't work yet, canceled a service call without telling me, and I've found out their "24 hour" customer service line shuts off at 9pm PST. I can't speak to the internet service yet, but so far their customer service really sucks.

Hey man you might want to take this down, it says right on the referral program website that employees cannot participate https://www.quantumfiber.com/support/account/refer-and-earn-faq.html

It's interesting it would say that, the company definitely promotes technicians referring customers as much as possible. I'm gonna look into that.

formerqwest2 points • 2024-03-21

yes as a tech Qwest had the U Can referral program, and i was even able to refer myself!

Albrightikis1 points • 2024-03-21

Oh maybe you have a different, internal, program. As a customer I’m only familiar with this one.
